Sound Euphonium Anime. Release Date, Plot, and More.

Kyoto Animation announced that the “Ensemble Concert” arc of the Sound Euphonium anime will be screened in Japanese theaters soon. The anime, which first aired in April 2015 with 13 episodes, was streamed by Crunchyroll and had home media distribution by Pony Canyon USA. The anime-inspired the “flashback” film “Gekij-ban Hibike!” which was released in April 2016 and centers around the character Kitauji Koko.

Kyoto Animation previously hinted at plans to adopt the “Concert” narrative of the Sound Euphonium anime into a medium-length film. The anime Sound Euphonium will be released in both theaters and on home video and will be directed by Tatsuya Ishihara. The story, which follows Kumiko’s junior year of high school, was written by Ayano Takeda in two light novel volumes, both released in 2019 with Volume 1 in April and Volume 2 in June. Additionally, Kyoto Animation announced two other animated features, “Liz and the Blue Bird” starring Mizore Yoroizuka and Nozomi Kasaki, which debuted in April 2018 in Japan.

Kyoto Animation released a preview trailer for an OVA based on the “Ensemble Concert” arc of Sound! Euphonium on December 27, 2022. The OVA will have its premiere in Japan and will first debut in theaters before being released on Blu-ray. The executive producer for the OVA is Naoko Yamada and the animation will be directed by Tatsuya Ishihara.

Euphonium 2, a 13-episode sequel series, premiered in October 2016. Crunchyroll streamed reruns of the anime during its initial run, and later Pony USA released it on home video. The second season of the anime led to the creation of a 2017 retrospective film. The film was released in theaters across the United States by Eleven Arts in November 2018, it is available in both Japanese and English language.

Kumiko Oumae, a first-year student at Kitauji High School, is determined to leave her troubled past behind. Despite her efforts to move on, she finds herself joining the school band club once again. She picks up the euphonium instrument with the help of her new friends Sapphire Kawashima and Hazuki Katou. The band is currently in a poor state and unable to compete in the local Sunfest, let alone at the national level. The band’s new advisor, Noboru Taki, gives them the choice to either take it easy and have fun or work hard and aim for the national competition.

Kumiko is hesitant to pursue the national competition due to her past experiences in middle school. Amidst the turmoil, she discovers that her former bandmate, Reina Kousaka, with whom she had a strained relationship, has also joined the band club at Kitauji. The band members, including Kumiko, are put through intense training by the advisor, Noboru Taki. They must overcome their differences and work together to achieve their goal as a unit.

The upcoming third season of the Sound! Euphonium anime is set to premiere in 2024. The first two seasons are currently available on Crunchyroll for viewing. The new season will have a theatrical debut, as well as a release on Blu-ray.
