Saichi Sugimoto, a soldier from the Russo-Japanese War, and Asirpa, a young Ainu girl, are the story’s main characters. They are on a quest to find substantial gold wealth that formerly belonged to the Ainu people.
The Ainu language used in the narrative is overseen by Hiroshi Nakagawa, a linguist at Chiba University who specializes in the Ainu language.
